A favorite pastime at The Feed Barn is sharing customers’ tales of the connections with the natural world. Seen the way so many of us do, from the porch or from the back deck as wildlife, an endearing jumble of beaks and claws and wings and antlers, press in to share the open spaces and margins along the remaining bits of serious woods. A big story with a lot of promise is a neighbor’s tale, from about 2 miles away, of a pair of great horned owls that has taken up lodging in a high tree at the back of their property. A county naturalist told them to cross their fingers, as this may mean young ones are on the way. This past January, a hapless truck driver spilled some cracked corn in the snow during a delivery. The next day someone announced that the side driveway was full of mystery birds. That started a rush for the windows, then another rush for the bird books we keep close by the counter. It turned out to be a band of horned larks, 60 at least. Striking creatures with pronounced eyebrows, who walk instead of hop (at least when they aren’t flying), looking immensely pleased about the unhappy driver’s mishap. We kept feeding them until the snow, and they, disappeared. We offer a variety of mixes for all the visitors to your backyard neighborhood. | ||||||
